Minneapolis, Minnesota – A dangerous round of severe storms is set to sweep across much of southern and central Minnesota beginning after 5 p.m. Monday, with the worst impacts likely continuing through 2 a.m. Tuesday. The National Weather Service warns of damaging winds up to 70 mph, large hail, and the potential for isolated tornadoes — especially in areas already saturated from Sunday night’s rainfall.

According to the National Weather Service in Twin Cities/Chanhassen, a Level 4 (Moderate Risk) zone is in effect for parts of west-central and southern Minnesota, including Montevideo, Redwood Falls, and Willmar. A Level 3 (Enhanced Risk) stretches across Minneapolis, Mankato, and Rochester. Flash flooding is also a concern in low-lying areas and urban zones where rainfall rates could exceed 1–2 inches per hour during training thunderstorms.

Cities like St. Paul, Red Wing, and Owatonna should prepare for possible power outages and blocked roads from wind-downed trees or debris. Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel after 5 p.m., secure outdoor items, and keep mobile devices charged.

This event marks one of the summer’s strongest storm systems so far and follows already wet conditions, which may worsen flooding. Additional alerts may be issued as the system evolves overnight.
