Tulsa, Oklahoma – Dangerous heat is gripping much of eastern Oklahoma, with temperatures and humidity combining to push heat index values as high as 111°F through 8 p.m. Wednesday. Extreme Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories blanket the region, prompting health officials to urge residents to take immediate precautions.

According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, these warnings cover cities including Tulsa, Miami, Muskogee, McAlester, and Fort Smith, Arkansas. The most severe warnings highlight areas like Sequoyah County and northern LeFlore County, where heat-related illnesses are much more likely. The remainder of the region remains under a Heat Advisory, with heat index values up to 109°F expected.

The combination of high humidity and temperatures in the mid-90s is especially hazardous for outdoor workers, children, older adults, and anyone without access to air conditioning. Emergency managers advise rescheduling strenuous outdoor activities, seeking frequent shade or air-conditioned breaks, and checking on neighbors and pets throughout the afternoon and into Wednesday. Hydration is critical—water is recommended over caffeine or alcohol.

Several city and county roads may see increased response from first responders due to heat-related health calls. This ongoing pattern is reminiscent of previous July heat waves and may continue to strain local utilities as air conditioners work overtime.

Heat headlines remain in effect through 8 p.m. Wednesday, and additional alerts could follow if conditions worsen.
