Tulsa, OK – Drivers across eastern Oklahoma could encounter damaging wind and rapidly intensifying thunderstorms tonight as a powerful storm line sweeps through the region, with gusts potentially exceeding 80 mph in isolated pockets.

According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, a significant line of severe thunderstorms is expected to move across eastern Oklahoma and into northwest Arkansas this evening and overnight. Forecasters warn that embedded tornadoes and large hail remain possible, but the most widespread threat may come from extreme straight-line winds capable of knocking down trees and power lines.

Communities including Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Bartlesville, Muskogee and McAlester sit in the zone most likely to see the strongest storms. Travel along Interstate 44, U.S. 412 and the Muskogee Turnpike could become hazardous as storms push east through the night. Northwest Arkansas cities such as Fayetteville and Fort Smith may also see severe wind and hail before the system exits toward morning.

Residents should secure outdoor furniture, charge phones and enable emergency alerts before going to bed. Overnight storms can develop quickly and warnings may be issued with little lead time.

The severe threat should taper off toward early Wednesday morning as the storm line shifts east, though additional advisories could be issued if conditions intensify.
