Tulsa, Oklahoma – A Red Flag Warning is in effect Tuesday as strong winds and low humidity elevate wildfire danger across eastern Oklahoma.

According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, dangerous fire weather conditions are expected to develop by late morning and continue through the afternoon into early evening. The warning is in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Forecasters expect south to southwest winds between 15 and 25 mph, with gusts reaching 35 to 40 mph. Minimum relative humidity values are forecast to drop as low as 15% to 25%, while afternoon temperatures rise into the mid-60s to lower 70s.

The most volatile conditions are expected along and north of Interstate 44 and west of Highway 75 in northeast Oklahoma, including areas near Tulsa, Bartlesville and Pawhuska. Additional impacted communities include Muskogee, McAlester and portions of Osage, Washington and Rogers counties.

Officials warn that any fires that develop could spread rapidly due to dry vegetation and gusty winds. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Residents are urged to properly dispose of cigarettes, secure trailer chains to prevent sparks and extinguish any previously lit fires.

The warning includes heavily traveled corridors such as I-44, U.S. Highway 75 and U.S. Highway 69, where roadside grasses may ignite quickly under dry conditions.

The elevated risk may be especially relevant for commuters, students and outdoor workers traveling during peak afternoon hours.

Authorities advise anyone who spots a wildfire to contact local emergency services immediately.
