Tulsa, Oklahoma – Fire danger is elevated across eastern Oklahoma today as gusty north winds and dropping humidity combine to create conditions favorable for fast-moving grass fires through sunset.

According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are expected this afternoon, while relative humidity falls into the 25 to 45 percent range. These conditions are driving enhanced grassland fire spread rates across much of eastern Oklahoma and portions of northwest Arkansas, including the Tulsa metro.

High temperatures will reach the mid-40s to mid-50s, but the combination of dry air and strong winds is the primary concern. Fire spread rates could reach 90 to 160 feet per minute, meaning even a small spark could quickly turn into a dangerous wildfire, especially in open fields, along roadways, or near dry vegetation.

In Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Bartlesville, Muskogee, and McAlester, residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning, properly discard cigarettes, and use extreme caution with welding or equipment that can produce sparks. Vehicles should not be parked on dry grass, as hot exhaust systems can ignite fires.

Conditions are expected to improve after sunset as winds gradually ease, but officials warn that dry fuels remain vulnerable. Residents should remain alert through the afternoon and early evening, as additional fire weather statements could be issued if winds or humidity worsen.
