TUCSON, Ariz. – A Flood Watch will take effect across much of southeast Arizona from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon as tropical moisture tied to Hurricane Lorena pushes into the region. Residents in Tucson, Sierra Vista, Nogales, and surrounding mountain communities could see rapid rises in creeks and washes by the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Tucson, rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected across valleys, with as much as 4 inches possible in higher elevations including the Catalina, Rincon, and Chiricahua Mountains. The agency warns that low-water crossings and urban streets in Pinal, Cochise, Graham, and Santa Cruz counties could flood quickly during downpours.

Drivers are urged to avoid travel through flooded roadways, particularly in areas prone to washouts such as State Route 90 near Huachuca City and rural roads south of Green Valley. Emergency management officials also recommend charging devices and keeping flashlights handy in case of power outages.

The heaviest rain is expected late Friday into early Saturday, with lingering showers tapering off by Saturday evening. Additional advisories could be issued if rainfall rates intensify.
