Tucson, Arizona – Afternoon temperatures surging toward 92 degrees will push heat stress levels higher along Interstate 10 through 6 p.m. Saturday, creating early-season health risks more typical of late spring. The unusual warmth is peaking through the weekend, putting southern Arizona within reach of record February highs.

According to the National Weather Service in Tucson, highs across Pima, Santa Cruz and Cochise counties will run 15 to 22 degrees above seasonal averages through Saturday. Tucson is expected to approach the lower 90s, while Nogales, Douglas and Sierra Vista climb into the upper 80s. Forecasters warn that the hottest window will occur between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. each afternoon, when sun exposure and dry air combine to accelerate dehydration.

Along I-10 from Casa Grande to Tucson and south along I-19 toward Nogales, drivers should carry extra water and check vehicle coolant levels before extended travel. Outdoor workers and hikers in the Tucson Mountains and along AZ-90 near Sierra Vista should take frequent shade breaks and wear lightweight clothing. Heat exhaustion can develop quickly during the first significant warm spell of the year, especially for those not yet acclimated.

Conditions will remain dry, with limited rain chances into early next week. Overnight lows will offer some relief, dropping into the 50s, but rapid daytime warming will return each afternoon.

More temperature records could be challenged through Saturday. Additional heat-related statements may be issued if afternoon highs trend higher than expected.
