Tucson, Arizona — Light rain showers are expected to move across southeastern Arizona on New Year’s Eve, with periods of rain continuing into the overnight hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Tucson, showers will begin at varying times across the region, starting late morning to early afternoon west of Tucson, spreading east into Tucson, Green Valley, Sierra Vista, and Douglas by late afternoon and evening. Rain chances will persist overnight, with an additional round of scattered showers possible Thursday.
While rainfall amounts are expected to remain light, two rounds of showers — with isolated thunder possible — are forecast between Wednesday evening and Friday morning, according to the NWS. Those with outdoor New Year’s Eve plans are advised to monitor conditions, as light rain may linger late into the night.
Roadways that could see slick conditions include Interstate 10 from Marana through Tucson and Benson, Interstate 19 toward Green Valley and Nogales, and state routes AZ-77, AZ-83, and AZ-86, particularly during periods of steady showers. Reduced visibility is possible during heavier bursts.
No flooding is anticipated at this time, but brief ponding on roadways may occur in low-lying or poorly drained areas. Temperatures will remain seasonably mild overnight, limiting additional hazards beyond wet pavement.
The National Weather Service recommends drivers slow down on wet roads and remain alert for changing conditions, especially during nighttime travel.
