Tucson, Arizona – Showers moving across southeast Arizona may lead to slick roads during New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day travel.

According to the National Weather Service in Tucson, the first round of showers began early Wednesday and will continue through New Year’s Eve, followed by a second round tonight through early Thursday morning. Showers are expected to develop from the southwest and spread northeast across the region.

Rainfall totals are forecast between 0.1 and 0.5 inches in valley locations, with 0.5 to 1.0 inches possible in the mountains, and locally higher amounts north of Tucson. While widespread flooding is not expected, light showers may create slick road conditions, especially during periods of steady rain.

The most likely travel impacts are expected New Year’s Eve tonight through early New Year’s Day, when rain may coincide with lower visibility and nighttime driving. Drivers should use caution along major corridors including Interstate 10, Interstate 19, State Route 77, State Route 86, and State Route 83, where wet pavement may increase stopping distances.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Thursday morning as showers taper off. No winter precipitation or severe weather is anticipated, but officials advise allowing extra travel time and using headlights during rain.

This weather pattern may affect holiday travelers, overnight workers, and early New Year’s Day commuters across the Tucson metro area and surrounding communities.
