South Lake Tahoe, CA – Residents and travelers heading into the Sierra Nevada should prepare for dangerous winter conditions this weekend as moderate to heavy mountain snow returns, with some areas facing up to 60 inches of accumulation by Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, a prolonged winter storm is forecast to impact the Sierra from Friday through Sunday, bringing heavy snowfall, reduced visibility, chain controls, and possible road closures. Officials strongly discourage mountain travel during this period due to rapidly deteriorating conditions.
Snowfall totals are expected to vary by elevation, with lower elevations near 6,000 feet receiving lighter amounts, while higher terrain and major Sierra passes could see 3 to 5 feet of snow, especially near Echo Summit, Donner Pass, Sonora Pass, and Ebbetts Pass. Some localized peaks could approach 48 to 60 inches by the end of the weekend.
Forecasters say snow levels will start between 6,000 and 7,500 feet on Friday, then drop to 5,000–6,000 feet by Saturday and Sunday, expanding impacts to more roadways. Periods of poor visibility and snow-covered roads are expected, particularly during heavier snowfall bursts.
The storm is expected to have a moderate to major travel impact, with chain requirements likely and temporary closures possible along key mountain routes. Drivers are urged to monitor Caltrans QuickMap for real-time road conditions and avoid unnecessary travel.
Officials recommend carrying winter survival supplies, checking vehicle traction requirements, and delaying trips if possible. Conditions may change rapidly, especially overnight and during heavier snow bands.
Travelers heading to the mountains this weekend should plan ahead and stay alert as winter conditions intensify across Northern California’s high country.
