Nassau, Bahamas – Tropical storm warnings are in effect across much of the Bahamas this weekend, with forecasters warning of dangerous seas and the potential for hurricane-force winds as early as Sunday night.
According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, marine forecasts show escalating conditions beginning Saturday. Winds are expected to increase to 30–45 knots across the Northern and Central Bahamas, while seas build from 7–11 feet Saturday to 25–38 feet by late Sunday in the open Atlantic waters east of the islands.
The most severe conditions are projected Sunday into Sunday night. NHC reports tropical storm conditions are expected in the Northern Bahamas, with hurricane-force winds possible in waters east of 67W. The Central Bahamas, including Cay Sal Bank, could also see tropical storm-force winds shifting rapidly from the east to south.
By Monday, storm conditions are expected to ease gradually, though swells of 7–13 feet will persist across the region. Conditions are forecast to improve further by midweek, with seas subsiding to 3–5 feet by Wednesday.
Boaters and residents are urged to monitor updates closely and avoid travel across open waters. “Individual waves may be more than twice the significant wave height,” the NHC cautioned, underscoring the risk for vessels and coastal areas.
This developing system poses significant marine and coastal hazards through at least early next week.
