Trinity County Thunderstorm Risk: Lightning, Gusty Winds Threaten Safety Through Saturday Evening

Eureka, California – Thunderstorms may pop up across eastern Trinity County this afternoon, bringing lightning, gusty winds, and a heightened risk of wildfire ignition through Saturday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, there’s a 10–20% chance for isolated thunderstorms from early afternoon into the evening hours across inland areas east of Weaverville and Trinity Center. The biggest concerns are dangerous lightning strikes and erratic winds, which could spark new fire starts in this already vulnerable region.

Residents in eastern Trinity County should stay weather-aware and be prepared to take cover. Outdoor plans—especially hiking, camping, or work in open terrain—should be reconsidered for the day. “When thunder roars, go indoors,” the NWS emphasized. Shelter inside a building or vehicle if storms approach.

This is a low-probability but high-impact weather setup that’s common in Northern California’s dry summer months. With vegetation already parched, even a stray lightning strike can lead to rapid fire development.

Thunderstorm chances taper off by late evening, but similar risks could return Sunday. Check weather.gov for real-time alerts.
