Raleigh, N.C. – Drivers across central North Carolina woke to dense fog Sunday morning, with visibility dropping to less than half a mile in some areas. The National Weather Service issued a Dense Fog Advisory until 9 a.m., warning that low visibility could create hazardous travel for commuters and early morning traffic.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, the advisory covered Wake, Durham, Johnston, Orange, Harnett, and surrounding counties. Officials urged drivers to use low-beam headlights, reduce speed, and leave extra distance between vehicles. School zones and bus routes were noted as higher-risk areas where caution is critical.
The fog is expected to lift by mid-morning as skies gradually clear. Once the haze breaks, central North Carolina will see sunshine and highs in the low 90s, making for a hot and humid afternoon. However, conditions will shift again Monday with scattered thunderstorms possible across the region.
Travelers are advised to remain alert on secondary highways including U.S. 1, I-40, and I-85 during the early hours. Authorities say additional advisories could be issued overnight in coming days as humidity remains high.
