New York, NY – Strong overnight winds caused widespread damage across downstate New York, Connecticut, and parts of northern New Jersey early Monday, toppling trees, blocking roads, and disrupting rail service.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, reports began shortly after midnight, with a tree falling onto railroad tracks near Aqueduct Road and North Conduit Avenue in Howard Beach, Queens, suspending service between Rockaway Boulevard and Broad Channel.

In Suffolk County, highway crews responded to multiple closures, including NY 114 in East Hampton, NY 24 in Southampton, and NY 25 in Cutchogue, where fallen trees and downed wires forced full lane shutdowns. A Long Island Expressway ramp near Exit 68 in Shirley was also blocked by a fallen tree.

Connecticut’s Department of Highways reported similar damage, with CT-85 in Salem and Route 53 in Wilton both closed due to trees and wires in the roadway. RT 431 in Chester was also shut down because of storm debris.

In New Jersey, law enforcement in Bloomfield (Essex County) reported a tree landing on a home at 98 Orchard Street around 8:45 a.m.

Offshore, a buoy located 26 miles southeast of Robert Moses State Park recorded a peak wind gust of 60 mph early Monday, marking some of the strongest winds of the event.

Crews across the tri-state region continued clearing debris through Monday afternoon as power restoration and rail inspections remained underway.
