WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A widespread freeze warning will bring sub-freezing temperatures to parts of the lower Hudson Valley, northern New Jersey, and southern Connecticut overnight tonight, from midnight until 9AM Friday, as the region experiences its first hard frost of the fall season.
According to the National Weather Service in New York City (Upton), the warning includes Northern Westchester, Rockland, Orange, and Putnam counties in New York; Western Passaic County in New Jersey; and Northern Fairfield, Northern New Haven, Northern Middlesex, and Northern New London counties in Connecticut. Overnight lows are expected to fall to around 30 degrees in rural and inland areas.
Forecasters caution that frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and damage sensitive vegetation, signaling the likely end of the growing season for many inland locations. Residents should cover or bring in tender plants, shut off outdoor spigots, and wrap exposed pipes to prevent freeze damage.
Clear skies and light winds will help temperatures drop quickly after midnight. Motorists traveling early Friday along I-84, the Taconic Parkway, and Route 17 may encounter patchy frost on bridges and shaded stretches.
According to forecasters, the chill will ease this weekend as highs rebound into the 60s, though another cold surge could return early next week, bringing renewed frost concerns to interior sections of the tri-state area.
