PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The air feels heavy and restless across western Pennsylvania this early Sunday, as dark clouds ripple in from Ohio and a gusty wind rattles early leaf piles. A strong fall cold front is on the move, promising an active day of weather — heavy rain, possible thunderstorms, and a dramatic drop in temperature by midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, showers and a few strong thunderstorms will roll through this afternoon and evening, bringing gusts as high as 35 mph. The main concern is damaging wind, though brief downpours could also reduce visibility along I-79 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. A few storms may pulse severe between 3 and 7 p.m., particularly west of the city in Beaver, Washington, and Greene counties.

As the front passes, winds shift and cooler, drier air spills into the region Monday. Temperatures fall from the upper 70s Sunday to the low 60s by Monday afternoon, setting up a crisp and quiet start to the week. Skies clear Tuesday, but another round of light rain and brisk wind arrives Wednesday — just as temperatures tumble again toward the low 40s.

By Wednesday night and Thursday morning, forecasters warn of the season’s first frost or freeze potential, especially north of Pittsburgh and into the higher ridges. Residents should plan to protect tender plants, check furnace filters, and secure outdoor items before the chill settles in. It’s a classic October swing — from rumbling storms to frosty mornings in less than three days.
