Billings, Montana – A line of dangerous thunderstorms is expected to sweep across southeast Montana, southwest North Dakota, and western South Dakota through midnight Sunday, bringing damaging winds, large hail, and heavy downpours to the region.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now in effect until 12:00 a.m. MDT for Montana counties including Carter, Custer, Fallon, Powder River, and Rosebud. North Dakota’s Adams, Bowman, and Slope counties, along with South Dakota’s Butte, Custer, Fall River, Haakon, Harding, Lawrence, Meade, Pennington, Perkins, and Ziebach counties, are also under the watch.

Communities along Highway 212 and I-90 could see rapid storm development this evening, with winds topping 60 mph and hail up to one inch in diameter possible. Emergency officials urge residents in Miles City, Bowman, Rapid City, and surrounding areas to secure loose outdoor items, stay off the roads during storms, and have a plan for power outages.

This severe weather event follows a stretch of dry, warm days and could be the most intense storm system so far this spring. Keep devices charged and monitor local alerts, as more warnings or advisories could be issued overnight. The Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 12:00 a.m. MDT.
