Charleston, W.Va. – Nearly 3 million residents across Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 6 p.m. Friday as dangerous storms sweep through the region, bringing the threat of tornadoes, 80 mph wind gusts, and hail up to 2 inches in diameter.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a couple of tornadoes are possible in the impacted area, which includes Kingsport, Knoxville, London, and Beckley. The storm system has already prompted a Flood Watch for flash flooding through 4 a.m. Saturday across vulnerable low-lying areas.
Scattered power outages and downed trees are likely, especially in areas with saturated soil. Emergency officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel, secure outdoor items, and remain alert to changing conditions. Stronger storms are expected to redevelop late Friday evening into the overnight hours.
Drivers along I-75, I-81, and U.S. Route 23 should use extra caution, particularly near the Kentucky-Virginia border. School districts in affected counties may announce early dismissals or activity cancellations depending on late-day storm intensification.
Severe weather alerts remain in effect through tonight. Additional watches or warnings may be issued as storm conditions evolve.
