New York, N.Y. – Afternoon storms could slam the New York metro and surrounding areas with damaging wind gusts, heavy rain and frequent lightning today as the Storm Prediction Center upgrades the region to a Marginal Risk for severe weather. The most intense cells are expected to develop during peak commute hours, raising concerns for road safety and transit delays.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, the threat extends through late Wednesday evening, affecting portions of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Storms may form quickly and intensify, producing wind gusts strong enough to bring down tree limbs and cause scattered power outages.

Impacted areas include New York City, Newark, Paterson, Bridgeport, New Haven, and coastal Long Island communities like Islip, Stony Brook and Montauk. Drivers on I-95, the New Jersey Turnpike and Long Island Expressway should be prepared for sudden downpours and low visibility.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid open areas during lightning, and check local alerts before traveling. The weather service advises keeping devices charged in case of outages.
