New York, NY – A life-threatening heat wave is set to grip the Tri-State area Friday, with heat index values surging as high as 107 degrees in several cities, prompting widespread warnings and urgent safety measures.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, the heat index will climb into triple digits across much of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. Friday, July 25. Cold Spring, NY and Waterbury, CT are both expected to reach a stifling 107°, while New York City, White Plains, and Newark will all feel like 104° or hotter. Hartford, CT, and Middletown, NY, will also see heat indices above 105°. Cooling centers are open citywide, and officials urge residents to limit outdoor activities, especially between noon and 6 p.m.

Transit agencies, including MTA and NJ Transit, are preparing for delays as extreme heat can impact trains and power lines. The NYC Office of Emergency Management warns of an increased risk for heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those without air conditioning. Residents should check on neighbors, stay hydrated, and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles. Power grid operators are urging energy conservation to prevent blackouts.

The intense heat is expected to moderate slightly by Saturday, but heat indices in the 90s will linger into the weekend. More advisories may follow if the pattern persists.
