Oakland, Md. – Cold air spilling into the highlands could damage tender plants across parts of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia early Sunday, with frost likely forming in sheltered valleys.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Frost Advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. EDT Sunday for Western Garrett County in Maryland, Western Highland County in Virginia, and Western Grant and Pendleton Counties in West Virginia. Temperatures are expected to fall to around 34°F, enough to form frost on exposed surfaces.

In Garrett County, gardeners and farmers are urged to cover delicate crops or bring potted plants indoors. Similar precautions are advised in the higher terrain of Highland, Grant, and Pendleton Counties, where clear skies and calm winds will allow rapid cooling before sunrise.

Frost can damage early-season vegetables and ornamental plants. Residents should use breathable fabric like burlap or bed sheets to insulate vulnerable plants overnight.

The advisory will expire by mid-morning as temperatures rebound. However, additional cold mornings are possible early next week depending on cloud cover and wind.
