Philadelphia, PA – Streets from Allentown to Camden could be underwater by tonight as a flood watch blankets the region starting at 3 p.m. Wednesday, with heavy downpours expected to dump up to 4 inches of rain in some spots by early Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, intense thunderstorms will roll through eastern Pennsylvania, northern Delaware, and much of New Jersey this evening, producing 1 to 2 inches of rainfall in just a few hours. Urban areas like Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Trenton are especially vulnerable to flash flooding due to poor drainage.
In Pennsylvania, the alert covers Carbon, Monroe, Berks, Bucks, Lehigh, Montgomery, Chester, Delaware, and Philadelphia counties. In New Jersey, the watch includes Camden, Burlington, Mercer, Somerset, and Sussex counties. New Castle County is under alert in Delaware.
Drivers should avoid low-lying roads and underpasses this evening. Residents in flood-prone neighborhoods are urged to charge devices, monitor alerts, and prepare to shelter in place if water levels rise quickly.
This is the second significant rain event in as many weeks for the region. Flood watches remain in effect until 3 a.m. Thursday, with additional warnings possible tonight.
