Hitchcock, Neb. – Flooding across southwest Nebraska is creating dangerous travel conditions as streams and rivers continue to rise Wednesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Goodland, small stream flooding remains a threat in Hitchcock County until 4 p.m. after 3 to 5 inches of rain fell in the past 24 hours. Additional rainfall is not expected, but runoff is keeping water levels high.
Communities including Trenton, Culbertson and Palisade are experiencing flooding in low-lying areas. Riverbanks and culverts are unstable, and officials warn that water could continue to rise. Drivers are urged to avoid flood-prone roads, as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
Emergency managers stress that flooded roadways may collapse without warning. In hilly terrain, low-water crossings can be especially dangerous in heavy rain. Authorities urge residents to seek alternate routes and never attempt to drive through standing water.
The flood warning remains in effect through late Wednesday afternoon, with more advisories possible if runoff worsens conditions.
