Trenton, New Jersey – A widespread winter snow event will overspread New Jersey, northern Delaware, eastern Pennsylvania, and parts of northeast Maryland tonight, creating hazardous travel from this evening through Sunday afternoon. The heaviest snow is expected overnight into early Sunday, with several inches of accumulation likely across central New Jersey.
Snow begins this evening, generally after 7 p.m., spreading from west to east. Rates increase overnight, with the most impactful window between about midnight and 7 a.m. Sunday. Snow continues into late morning before tapering off early Sunday afternoon, depending on location.
According to the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for much of the region. In central New Jersey, including Mercer, Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex, and Monmouth counties, snow totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected, with localized amounts of 3 to 5 inches possible in Somerset and Hunterdon counties. The advisory runs from 7 p.m. this evening to 1 p.m. Sunday.
Farther south in Delaware and coastal southern New Jersey, including Cape May and Kent counties, snow totals are generally forecast to reach up to 2 inches between 1 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday. In northern New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania, including Sussex, Morris, Warren, Berks, Lehigh, and Northampton counties, snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected, with advisories lasting through early Sunday morning.
Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly overnight. According to state transportation agencies, untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses will become snow-covered, especially during the overnight and early morning hours. Drivers heading out late tonight or early Sunday should reduce speeds, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time. Sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots may also become slick, increasing fall risk.
Conditions improve gradually Sunday afternoon as snowfall ends and crews catch up on road treatment.
