Traverse City, Mich. – Swimmers across much of northern Michigan are being warned of hazardous conditions on Lake Michigan beaches Monday as waves build to 2 to 3 feet.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a moderate swim risk is in place for all Lake Michigan beaches except Leelanau, Grand Traverse, Antrim, and Charlevoix counties. Forecasters say breaking waves and dangerous currents will make swimming unsafe, particularly for weaker swimmers.

The combination of partly to mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 60s could draw more beachgoers, but officials urge caution. Rip currents and pier-related hazards are the biggest concerns, and beach safety reminders include wearing life jackets, avoiding piers, and staying dry when waves are high.

Elsewhere in northern Michigan, conditions remain dry and pleasant Monday with a southwest breeze. Shower chances increase late Monday night into Wednesday, mainly across the eastern Upper Peninsula, before skies turn mostly sunny again by Thursday.

Beach warnings remain in effect through Monday evening, and additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.

Five Day Forecast for Traverse City, Michigan:

  • Monday: Partly to mostly sunny, breezy, highs 65–70. Moderate swim risk on Lake Michigan.
  • Tuesday: Showers possible in eastern Upper and northwest Lower, highs 67–77.
  • Wednesday: Showers in the eastern Upper, highs 69–79.
  • Thursday: Mostly sunny, highs 69–80.
  • Friday: Partly sunny, highs 69–80.
