Lingering lake effect snow showers and cooler temperatures are affecting travel across northern Lower Michigan on Tuesday, with additional changes expected later this week.

According to the National Weather Service Gaylord, light lake effect snow showers will persist today, especially near and west of Traverse City, including areas along U.S. 31 and M-72. High temperatures are expected to struggle to escape the teens and lower 20s, which may allow light snow to accumulate on untreated roads through the afternoon and early evening.

Snowfall through 7 p.m. Tuesday is expected to remain generally light, but brief reductions in visibility are possible under heavier snow showers. Drivers traveling along U.S. 31, M-72, and nearby secondary roads should be prepared for localized slick spots, particularly in areas closer to Lake Michigan.

Conditions are expected to quiet down on Wednesday, with mostly dry weather and slightly milder temperatures returning. Highs are forecast to range from the upper teens to mid-20s, offering a short break from persistent snow showers and improving road conditions for commuters and commercial traffic.

Snow chances return on Thursday as the next system approaches the region. While details on accumulation remain uncertain, snow showers could again impact travel along I-75 and U.S. 131, especially during peak travel hours.

A stronger cold front is forecast to move through early Friday, bringing sharply colder air by Friday afternoon and into the weekend. Temperatures are expected to fall through the day, with much colder conditions developing Friday night, increasing the risk of icy roads and reduced traction.

Motorists, including early-morning workers and students, are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts, allow extra travel time, and use caution during periods of snow and falling temperatures.
