Gaylord, Michigan – Bitterly cold conditions are returning to northern Michigan as an Arctic air mass moves into the Great Lakes region Friday, bringing gusty winds, falling temperatures, and dangerous wind chills through Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, temperatures will steadily drop throughout the day Friday as cold air pours into the region. Conditions will worsen Friday night, when wind chill values are expected to fall between -15 and -25 degrees, creating a significant risk of frostbite on exposed skin.

Ongoing lake-effect snow showers, combined with gusty winds, will lead to hazardous driving conditions at times, particularly in areas prone to lake-effect snow. Blowing snow may reduce visibility, especially along major travel routes including Interstate 75, US-31, US-23, US-131, and surrounding state highways.

Wind chill forecasts show the coldest conditions developing overnight Friday into early Saturday morning. Locations such as Gaylord, Traverse City, Alpena, Cadillac, and Petoskey are expected to experience the most dangerous cold during this period. Even during daylight hours Saturday, wind chills may remain below zero across much of northern Lower Michigan and eastern Upper Michigan.

The National Weather Service warns that frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes under these conditions. Residents are urged to cover all exposed skin, limit time outdoors, and ensure pets are brought indoors. Checking on elderly neighbors and vulnerable individuals is also strongly encouraged.

Drivers should prepare for winter travel conditions, allowing extra travel time and keeping emergency supplies in vehicles. Gusty winds and lake-effect snow may cause sudden changes in visibility, particularly Friday night into Saturday.

This cold snap may impact commuters, school transportation, outdoor workers, and travelers, especially during the overnight and early morning hours.

Residents are advised to continue monitoring forecasts and statements from the National Weather Service as bitter cold conditions persist into the weekend.
