Gaylord, Mich. – Subzero temperatures will grip northern Michigan overnight before a gradual warmup brings snow chances Tuesday and rain by midweek.

Clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to plummet Sunday night into early Monday. Many inland locations around Gaylord, Petoskey, and Grayling could fall below zero, with lows ranging from 5 below to near 10 degrees above zero elsewhere. Roads along M-32 and US-131 may refreeze overnight as any lingering moisture turns to ice by 7 a.m. Monday.

Monday will remain sunny but seasonably cool, with highs climbing into the upper 20s and mid-30s. Travel conditions should improve during the afternoon as pavement temperatures rise above freezing.

A transition begins Tuesday as milder air pushes into the region. Highs are forecast to reach the mid-30s to lower 40s, and a chance of light snow will develop during the day. While widespread heavy accumulation is not expected, brief bursts of snow could reduce visibility along US-31 near Traverse City and US-23 in Alpena.

By Wednesday, temperatures continue moderating into the upper 30s and mid-40s. Precipitation is more likely to fall as rain, especially along I-75 from Grayling north toward Sault Ste. Marie. Snowpack melting combined with rainfall may create slushy and wet road conditions.

Residents should prepare for hazardous cold through early Monday morning, then monitor forecast updates as precipitation returns midweek. Rapid changes in temperature will bring shifting travel conditions across northern Michigan through Wednesday.
