Traverse City, MI – Residents in Traverse City experienced tense moments late Saturday after police say two teens allegedly opened fire at officers during a foot pursuit that began with a larceny-from-auto call.

According to the Traverse City Police Department, officers were dispatched around 10:07 p.m. on Saturday, November 15, to the 1200 block of East 8th Street after reports of suspects wearing hoodies and masks walking away from a vehicle break-in. Officers later located two individuals matching that description in a parking lot along the 100 block of Munson Avenue.

Police say the teens fled on foot when officers approached. During the chase, one of the suspects allegedly pulled a firearm and fired multiple shots toward officers. No officers were injured, though a round did strike the pant leg of a Traverse City Police Department uniform.

Authorities say an 18-year-old Traverse City male and a 17-year-old Traverse City male were taken into custody shortly afterward. Michigan State Police executed a search warrant at a nearby hotel where the 17-year-old was found standing outside. Officers recovered the firearm used in the shooting just outside the hotel room, along with spent casings at the scene.

Police report the 18-year-old faces charges of Larceny from Auto and Resisting and Obstructing. The 17-year-old is charged with Attempted Homicide, Larceny from Auto, and Resisting and Obstructing. Both are lodged at the Grand Traverse County Jail.

A temporary shelter-in-place advisory issued during the response has since been lifted, and officials say there are no ongoing public safety concerns.
