Traverse City, MI – A man was found dead early Sunday morning in downtown Traverse City in what police are investigating as a homicide.

According to Chief Matthew Richmond of the Traverse City Police Department, officers were dispatched around 7:48 a.m. Sunday, November 16, 2025, to the 300 block of East State Street, where they discovered a deceased male who appeared to have been shot. The victim was identified as 32-year-old Lawerance Boyd IV of Traverse City, an employee of the city’s Parking Services division.

Police say evidence at the scene links this case to the attempted homicide of a Traverse City Police officer that occurred the previous night, November 15 around 10:30 p.m. Two suspects connected to that earlier incident are already in custody, and the firearm involved has been recovered.

“At this time, there is no further public safety concern,” Chief Richmond said in the release. The investigation remains active, with assistance from the Michigan State Police Crime Lab, Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, Traverse City Fire Department, MMR, Grand Traverse County Central Dispatch, and the Western Michigan University School of Medicine’s Medical Examiner’s Office.

Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
