Traverse City, MI – Multiple rounds of snow are expected to create dangerous travel conditions across northern Lower Michigan beginning Saturday night and lasting through Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Saturday until 7 a.m. Sunday, followed by a Winter Storm Watch from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening. Snow totals of 2 to 5 inches are expected overnight, with an additional 4 to 7 inches possible during the second round.

Travel impacts are expected along US-31, M-72, and local roadways throughout Grand Traverse County and the Traverse City metro area. Snow on Monday will be accompanied by strong northwest winds gusting up to 40 mph, leading to significant blowing and drifting snow.

Forecasters warn that whiteout conditions are possible Monday, which could make travel treacherous or even life-threatening. The hazardous conditions may impact both the Monday morning and evening commutes, especially in open and rural areas.

Lake effect snow bands may cause rapid changes in visibility and road conditions, with heavy snow falling in one area while nearby locations see minimal accumulation.

Drivers are urged to slow down, avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall, and closely monitor forecast updates as conditions evolve.
