Western Greenbrier, WV – A powerful winter storm will bring blizzard conditions to parts of West Virginia beginning late this morning, according to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg. The Blizzard Warning remains in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday through 10 a.m. Thursday, with total snow accumulations between 5 and 8 inches and wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph.
According to the alert, Western Greenbrier County, including Quinwood, Duo, and Rainelle, will see the most significant impacts. The NWS warns of whiteout conditions, blowing and drifting snow, and extremely hazardous travel through Thursday morning. Drivers are urged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
The weather service added that gusty winds may bring down tree branches and create dangerous wind chills for anyone outdoors. Travel impacts are expected to worsen during the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes, with limited visibility and icy conditions likely.
Officials advise residents to carry a winter survival kit if travel cannot be avoided and to stay with vehicles if stranded. For the latest road conditions in West Virginia, dial 511 or check local alerts before heading out.
