Herkimer, NY – A Lake Effect Snow Warning is in effect for Northern Herkimer and Hamilton counties from early Thursday morning until Friday at 7 a.m.
The National Weather Service predicts between 7 and 15 inches of snow, with some areas north of Route 28 seeing up to 20 inches. Wind gusts reaching 40 mph could create blowing snow and whiteout conditions.
Roads are expected to become slick and treacherous, especially during the Thursday morning and evening commutes. Visibility may drop below a quarter mile in affected areas.
Officials recommend delaying non-essential travel. Drivers should carry emergency supplies, such as water, food, and flashlights, and use extreme caution on roads. Sudden changes in visibility and conditions will challenge drivers.
Lake-effect snow can vary significantly, creating heavy snow bands in one area and clear skies nearby. Travelers are urged to monitor updates and check road conditions by calling 511.
Stay prepared, plan ahead, and avoid unnecessary risks during this storm.
