Chicago, IL – Significant ramp closures will begin on the Kennedy Expressway on May 19 as part of the ongoing rehabilitation project. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced that closures will affect various ramps from the Edens Expressway (I-94) junction to Ohio Street. These closures are expected to last several weeks and are necessary to complete repairs and pavement patching.

According to IDOT, the following ramp closures are scheduled to begin:

  • Monday, May 19: Ogden Avenue to outbound Kennedy, expected to reopen in about one week.
  • Wednesday, May 21: Outbound Kennedy to Division Street, anticipated to reopen in one week.
  • Monday, May 26: Outbound Kennedy to Ohio Street, expected to reopen in one week.
  • Wednesday, May 28: Keeler Avenue to outbound Kennedy, expected to reopen in approximately two weeks.

Motorists are advised to follow posted detours to avoid disruptions.

This project, which is part of the third and final phase of the Kennedy Expressway rehab, will see all lanes and ramps reopen by Thanksgiving, with the express lanes returning to normal operation in mid-July. Public transportation options, including the Chicago Transit Authority’s Blue Line and Metra’s Union Pacific Northwest Line, are recommended for alternative routes during construction.
