TOWNER, N.D. – Strong thunderstorms are sweeping across central Towner County this afternoon, bringing the threat of large hail and damaging winds to several northeastern North Dakota towns.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, a severe thunderstorm was located near Bisbee at 3:12 p.m. Wednesday, moving northeast at 35 mph. The storm carries the potential for 60 mph wind gusts and hail up to the size of half dollars. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 3:45 p.m. CDT.
Communities under the warning include Bisbee, Egeland, Considine, and Arndt. Officials warn that hail could dent vehicles and wind could damage roofs, siding, and trees. Drivers along rural routes northeast of Rugby should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, including reduced visibility and road hazards from falling debris.
Residents are urged to move indoors immediately, staying on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and away from windows. Outdoor activity should be postponed until the warning expires.
The National Weather Service will provide updates if the storm strengthens or additional warnings are issued later this evening.
