Toronto, ON – Freezing rain is expected to create hazardous conditions across Toronto beginning Saturday night and continuing into Sunday morning, prompting a special weather statement from Environment Canada.

According to Environment Canada, significant ice accretion of 3 to 5 millimeters is likely, with the greatest impacts expected overnight into early Sunday. Surfaces may become slippery, and ice build-up could result in broken tree branches and isolated power outages. Temperatures are forecast to fall just below zero overnight, increasing the risk of ice formation on untreated roads and sidewalks.

Residents are urged to use caution when walking or driving, especially during the early morning hours on Sunday. Freezing rain warnings could be issued if the system intensifies, and motorists should allow extra time for travel and avoid sudden stops or turns.

Periods of freezing rain are forecast to begin late Saturday, transitioning to rain or showers by mid-morning Sunday. Winds from the east at 20 km/h gusting to 40 may worsen conditions, particularly near exposed surfaces and elevated areas.

Officials recommend monitoring local alerts and preparing for potential utility disruptions. Updates will be shared via Environment Canada and the #ONStorm tag on social media.
