A dangerous round of severe weather is expected to develop Monday across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, with the greatest tornado risk stretching from South Carolina to Maryland, according to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center.

Forecasters warn that widespread damaging winds and several tornadoes are possible, including the potential for some strong tornadoes, as storms move east from the Appalachian Mountains toward the East Coast during the afternoon and evening.

The highest risk corridor runs from central and eastern South Carolina through North Carolina, Virginia, and into parts of Maryland, including areas near Richmond, Norfolk, Washington D.C., and Baltimore.

Storms are expected to intensify as they move eastward during the afternoon, with the greatest threat for damaging winds from South Carolina into Maryland. These storms could produce wind gusts capable of downing trees and power lines, along with tornadoes embedded within fast-moving storm lines.

The Storm Prediction Center notes that several tornadoes are possible along the storm line, and some could become strong depending on storm development and atmospheric conditions.

Residents across the region are urged to closely monitor weather forecasts and have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially during the afternoon and evening hours when storms are expected to peak.

Officials say people should be prepared to move quickly to shelter if tornado warnings are issued, as storms may move rapidly across the region.
