Jackson, Mississippi – More than 3.4 million residents across Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 3 a.m. CDT Monday, as powerful storms threaten to bring 70 mph wind gusts, ping-pong ball-sized hail, and intense lightning overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, the watch covers major cities including Jackson, Meridian, Montgomery, and Birmingham. Scattered storms moving eastward could intensify through the night, increasing the risk of downed trees, power outages, and dangerous driving conditions across I-20, I-55, and I-59 corridors.
In Mississippi, communities like Natchez, Laurel, and parts of Hinds and Rankin counties are expected to see the strongest impacts. In Alabama, frequent lightning and hail are possible in the Montgomery and Troy areas, while in Louisiana, cities like Bastrop are included in the watch zone.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and avoid unnecessary travel overnight. Schools and hospitals across the tri-state region could face temporary disruptions if storms escalate.
The threat is expected to taper off after 3 a.m., but additional watches or warnings could be issued if the system persists into Monday morning. Stay tuned to local alerts.
