Topeka, KS – Strong northwest winds are expected to impact Topeka and much of northeast Kansas early Thursday, prompting a Wind Advisory as gusts climb high enough to affect travel, utilities, and outdoor objects.

According to the National Weather Service in Topeka, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 6 p.m. CST Thursday for Shawnee County and surrounding areas. Sustained northwest winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour are forecast, with gusts reaching up to 55 mph at times.

The advisory includes Shawnee, Douglas, Osage, Franklin, Coffey, Anderson, Jefferson, Jackson, Brown, and Nemaha counties. Cities expected to see the strongest winds include Topeka, Lawrence, Ottawa, Garnett, Holton, Hiawatha, and Seneca.

Forecasters warn that gusty winds may blow around unsecured outdoor objects and could bring down small tree limbs. Isolated power outages are possible, especially in areas with weakened trees or overhead power lines.

Travel conditions may become hazardous, particularly for high-profile vehicles such as semi-trucks, delivery vans, campers, and vehicles towing trailers. North-south oriented roadways could see the greatest impact as strong crosswinds develop during the morning and afternoon hours.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items such as trash bins, holiday decorations, and lightweight furniture before winds increase overnight. Drivers should use extra caution Thursday, reduce speed, and keep both hands on the wheel when encountering strong gusts.

Winds are expected to gradually weaken Thursday evening after the advisory expires, though breezy conditions may linger into the night.

The National Weather Service recommends monitoring updated forecasts and local alerts, as timing and wind intensity may vary across the region.
