Topeka, Kansas – Drivers and residents across eastern Kansas face an elevated tornado threat through 9 p.m. Friday, with storms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and brief tornadoes during the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Topeka, Tornado Watch 130 remains in effect until 9 p.m. CDT for eight counties, including Shawnee, Douglas, Franklin, and Jefferson. The watch covers major population centers such as Topeka, Lawrence, and Emporia, where atmospheric conditions support rotating thunderstorms.
Storms are expected to intensify along key corridors like I-70 and I-35, increasing the risk of rapid changes in visibility and hazardous driving conditions. In Shawnee County, including Topeka, heavy rain and wind gusts could lead to localized power outages. Cities including Ottawa, Burlington, Osage City, and Oskaloosa are also in the watch zone, with storms expected to move quickly from southwest to northeast.
The tornado watch remains active until 9 p.m. Friday, and additional warnings may be issued with little notice as storms develop.
