SAN ANGELO, Texas – Fire danger is on the rise across the Big Country this weekend, with forecasters warning that gusty winds and dry air will create conditions favorable for wildfires through Sunday evening. The National Weather Service in San Angelo said areas including Abilene, Sweetwater, and Haskell face the highest risk of rapid fire spread, especially during the afternoon hours.
According to the National Weather Service, winds from the south at 10 to 20 mph will combine with low humidity levels to produce elevated fire weather conditions both Saturday and Sunday. Even small sparks could ignite quickly and spread fast in the dry grass and brush common across west-central Texas.
Residents are urged to take extra precautions—make sure trailer chains aren’t dragging, avoid driving or parking on dry grass, and postpone any outdoor burning. Fire officials recommend keeping water or extinguishing tools nearby if working outdoors.
The heightened fire risk is expected to persist through Sunday night, with no significant moisture in the forecast to ease conditions. Additional advisories could be issued if winds strengthen further.
