Tippecanoe County, IN – A fatal three-semi crash is under investigation after one truck driver was killed Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 65, according to the Indiana State Police Lafayette District.

Police said the collision occurred around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, 2026, near mile marker 176 southbound in Tippecanoe County. A preliminary investigation found that a 2023 Freightliner semi-truck traveling southbound struck two other semis—a 2022 Peterbilt and a 2025 Freightliner—that had slowed in traffic because of a separate crash ahead.

According to state police, the 2023 Freightliner failed to slow for backed-up traffic and collided with the two trucks. The driver of the 2023 Freightliner was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office. Authorities said the driver’s name will be released after family notification.

The drivers of the other two trucks were not injured, police confirmed. Emergency responders from the Battle Ground Fire Department, Lafayette Fire Department, Tippecanoe County EMS, and the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene.

The crash caused delays in the southbound lanes of I-65 for several hours as crews investigated and cleared debris. Officials said the investigation remains active and ongoing, with all details still preliminary.
