Indianapolis, IN – Three Honduran nationals have been sentenced to federal prison after a multi-state investigation uncovered a massive counterfeit check scheme that defrauded businesses and banks across Indiana and Oklahoma, authorities announced this week.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the defendants used fraudulent identification to cash more than 340 counterfeit payroll checks between January and June 2023. The scheme caused losses exceeding $533,000 and impacted numerous small businesses and community banks across more than a dozen states.

Indiana State Police detectives and troopers from the Lafayette Post played a key role in the investigation, which required coordination between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. Officers helped identify suspects, track movements, and collect critical evidence that ultimately led to the arrests and sentencing.

“This outcome reflects countless hours of coordination and determination,” said Sergeant Jeremy Piers, Public Information Officer for the Indiana State Police. “When criminal activity crosses into Indiana, we will work tirelessly with our partners to protect our communities, our businesses, and our financial institutions.”

The defendants will serve prison sentences, pay restitution, and face removal proceedings following completion of their sentences, officials confirmed.

More details are available through the U.S. Department of Justice press release.
