A Country Club Hills man has been charged with felony aggravated vehicular hijacking in connection to a September incident in Tinley Park, authorities announced Tuesday.

According to Tinley Park police, Jamal Britton, 33, approached a 27-year-old man as he was leaving work on Sept. 11 in the 18700 block of Ridgeland Avenue. Britton allegedly brandished a handgun and demanded the man’s car keys. A struggle ensued, during which Britton reportedly pistol-whipped the victim before grabbing what he thought were the car keys. However, after realizing he had only taken the remote start and not the actual keys, Britton fled the scene without stealing the 2012 Dodge Challenger.

Investigators identified Britton in February using his social media accounts and determined he resided in Chicago’s South Loop. Tinley Park detectives worked with the Chicago Police Department and the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force to track him down. Chicago police arrested Britton on March 3.

Mayor Michael Glotz praised the investigative work, calling it a “superb” effort that demonstrated strong cooperation between law enforcement agencies. Police Chief Tom Tilton also commended the detectives, stating their dedication made the community safer.

Britton now faces felony charges as the case proceeds through the Cook County court system.
