Olympia, WA – Drivers across Thurston County will see a significant increase in DUI patrols beginning next month as local officials ramp up enforcement following a sharp rise in arrests this year.

According to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO), DUI arrests jumped 91 percent between June and September compared to the same period in 2024. Sheriff’s officials say the spike highlights both the success of summer emphasis patrols and the persistent danger impaired driving poses across Washington.

TCSO announced this week that the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC) has awarded funding for a full-time, dedicated DUI Enforcement Deputy. The county will also invest its own resources to fund a second, full-time position. Both deputies are expected to begin duty on December 1.

Sheriff’s Office leaders described the move as a “major milestone,” noting that while an earlier grant request for a permanent DUI position was not selected, continued collaboration with traffic safety partners allowed the county to secure new support.

The two dedicated deputies will operate seven days a week, substantially expanding the county’s ability to identify impaired drivers, reduce serious crashes, and increase patrol visibility during high-risk hours. TCSO says this shift will strengthen public safety not only in Olympia but throughout Thurston County and nearby communities that rely on major highways such as I-5 for daily travel.

Statewide, impaired driving remains the leading factor in fatal crashes, according to WTSC. Sheriff’s officials say the added enforcement comes at a crucial time as the holiday season historically brings an increase in alcohol-related arrests.

Residents are reminded: “Always drive sober. We’re out there every day, keeping our roads safe,” TCSO said.
