Olympia, WA – An inmate at the Thurston County Jail died Sunday afternoon following a medical emergency, according to officials.
The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies and fire personnel responded to the jail around 12:30 p.m. on September 14, 2025, after staff called for help with an inmate in medical crisis. Corrections officers and on-site medical staff attempted life-saving measures, which were continued by arriving medics.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, medics began transporting the inmate when he was pronounced dead.
To maintain transparency, the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office requested an outside review of the incident. The Region 3 Critical Incident Investigation Team was activated, and the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office will serve as the lead agency.
The Thurston County Coroner’s Office will release the inmate’s identity and determine the official cause of death after completing its investigation.
Officials emphasized that the independent review is standard protocol for in-custody deaths.
