South Bend, Ind. – Northern Indiana will stay cooler than normal through Sunday, but a midweek shift brings rain and dangerous conditions along Lake Michigan. Showers are likely Thursday, especially for areas north of U.S. 30, while waves and rip currents will threaten beaches late Thursday into early Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, Thursday’s rain chances range from 30% to 70% depending on location, with the highest totals expected closer to the Michigan border. Winds over Lake Michigan will build dangerous waves late Thursday night, creating hazardous swimming conditions that may persist into Friday morning.

Communities from Michigan City to South Haven should avoid entering the water, as strong currents could overwhelm even experienced swimmers. Local officials warn that red flag conditions may be posted at beaches, with rip currents capable of pulling people away from shore in seconds.

Across the rest of northern Indiana, highs will stay in the lower to mid-70s through the weekend with cooler overnight lows dipping into the 40s and 50s. Conditions will gradually clear by Friday afternoon, with dry and sunny skies expected Saturday and Sunday.

Beach hazards remain a concern until Friday morning, and residents are advised to check the latest alerts before heading out.
