Gaylord, Michigan – Strong thunderstorms could develop this afternoon near Saginaw Bay and along the I-75 corridor in northern Michigan, bringing heavy rain and lightning to parts of both peninsulas. Commuters and travelers should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, especially east of I-75.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, early showers are likely Friday morning, with additional storms possible by afternoon. A few stronger cells may bring gusty winds and heavy downpours, particularly around Saginaw Bay and the northeast Lower Peninsula.
Rain tapers off Friday night, setting up a mainly dry Saturday with partly sunny skies and highs between 67°F and 80°F. However, storm chances return late Saturday night west of I-75, including areas near Traverse City and Petoskey.
On Sunday, showers and storms are expected again, especially in the afternoon. The highest risk will shift to eastern Upper Michigan, including Sault Ste. Marie and Newberry. Sunday will also bring the weekend’s warmest temps, with highs ranging from 81°F to 91°F.
More storms are possible early next week. Residents should stay weather-aware and monitor alerts, especially through Sunday afternoon.
