Des Moines, Iowa – A sharp cold front is sweeping into Iowa tonight, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms to the northern half of the state. Temperatures will dip into the mid-50s to near 60 overnight, setting up a cooler trend that will last through the end of the week.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, storms will spread across much of Iowa on Wednesday, with some carrying the potential for strong winds and heavy downpours. Highs will remain mild, topping out between 65 and 75 degrees.
By Thursday, scattered storms will linger into the evening, especially across central and eastern Iowa. Drivers along Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 20 should prepare for sudden downpours and slick road conditions during the evening commute. Outdoor events may also face weather delays.
The system exits by Friday, leaving behind drier and cooler conditions. Highs will fall into the upper 60s to low 70s under partly sunny skies, offering a fall-like close to the workweek.
Residents are advised to stay alert for any severe thunderstorm watches or warnings that could be issued Wednesday.
