Richmond, Va. – Damaging wind gusts and torrential rain threaten much of central and eastern Virginia through 9 p.m. Monday, as severe thunderstorms sweep the region. Roadways, neighborhoods, and rivers in Richmond, Norfolk, and surrounding cities are at risk for flash flooding and power outages tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch covers most of Virginia—excluding far southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina—until 9 p.m. The greatest concern is widespread damaging wind gusts that could topple trees and knock out electricity. Additionally, a Flood Watch is in effect for northeastern counties from Tappahannock through the Middle Peninsula, extending into Maryland’s Eastern Shore, including Cambridge and Salisbury, where very heavy rainfall is expected.

Cities under the Thunderstorm Watch include Richmond, Petersburg, Williamsburg, and Norfolk. The Flood Watch zone covers Tappahannock, Accomac, and areas along the Rappahannock and Potomac rivers. Residents should avoid non-essential travel this evening, secure loose outdoor items, and charge cell phones and medical devices ahead of possible outages. If you encounter flooded roads, turn around—do not attempt to drive through high water.

This round of severe storms comes amid an active summer for Virginia, reminiscent of similar multi-day events in July 2021. Both watches remain in effect until 9 p.m., with additional warnings possible if conditions worsen.
